An artistic journey often starts in unexpected places, and for Yuro Moniz, this was no exception. For the third instalment of the adidas Art Instalments series, Yuro takes her craft to new heights, blending her love for ceramics with the spirit of adidas. "I never set out to become an artist," she says. "It happened naturally. I don’t even see myself as an artist; I try to capture the craftsmanship within my work." Through a dialogue between material and maker, Yuro creates unique pieces that embody emotions, thoughts, and feelings.
Sustainability plays a central role in her creations. "I use every bit of clay, either in the initial piece or for future projects," Yuro explains. She often skips glazing, keeping the material in its raw state. For her, sustainability isn’t just a word; it’s a philosophy. "It’s a complete cycle; otherwise, sustainability is just a buzzword."
Her current installation, as part of the exhibition NEW WAVE. Future voices in Art, curated by DAR Cultural Agency, is now on display at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. It consists of 365 objects, with three grandmothers welcoming you into the space. This work is a glimpse of the direction she wants to explore further, where her vases represent a lifelong story. Each piece invites viewers to look beyond the surface, carrying a deeper meaning.
The connection between her art and the adidas Mundial sneakers is clear. "The colours and materials of the shoes inspired me," says Yuro. The three abstract vases in her installation subtly reference the iconic adidas stripes. The unglazed ceramic mirrors the purity of the sneakers, with each element embodying a sense of nostalgia and craftsmanship. "While making it, I envisioned a kind of trophy," she adds, referring to her concept of the "holy trinity of unification" that guides her work.
Fashion and aesthetics play a significant role in her everyday life, with a deep connection to 90s football culture. "That era still shapes how I see the world," she remarks with a smile. "The Mundial sneakers evoke a sense of coming home, a memory of a time that’s passed."
Yuro’s art evokes strong emotions and invites interaction. "I’d almost say, touch it! If you break it, you buy it, haha." She emphasises that her work is a reflection of her emotions, aiming for each viewer to discover their own interpretation. "My vases and ceramics are carriers of stories and emotions; it’s my way of communicating."
Through this collaboration with adidas, Yuro Moniz hopes that audiences will not only appreciate the craftsmanship but also feel a deep connection between the artwork, the sneakers, and their own emotions. The adidas Mundial is more than just a shoe crafted with premium suede, its timeless design represents a perfect blend of heritage and modernity. Don’t miss out on this iconic piece of culture.
