Heritage & Philosophy

Carhartt WIP was established in 1994 by Edwin Faeh as a European offshoot of Hamilton Carhartt’s original workwear legacy (dating back to 1889). Drawing on decades of rugged, utilitarian design, WIP adapts iconic garments, like the Detroit jacket and classic duck-cotton chore coat, to contemporary urban contexts. From its earliest days, the label immersed itself in skate, hip‑hop and graffiti subcultures, forging an authentic connection between heritage craftsmanship and street‑level expression.

Signature Materials & Iconic Models

At its core, Carhartt WIP honors the durability of heavyweight duck canvas, rigid denim and reinforced stitching that made the original workwear legendary. Key pieces include the Detroit jacket, Michigan coat and WIP Essential pants: each built to withstand daily wear while offering a refined fit. Modern updates introduce water‑repellent finishes, garment washes and subtle logo placements, ensuring these staples remain both functional and effortlessly stylish.

Brand Vision & Evolution

Building on its workwear roots, Carhartt WIP continually reinvents classics through collaborations with like‑minded designers such as Junya Watanabe, Nike and Marni, as well as with music collectives and visual artists. These partnerships bring fresh reinterpretations, whether through limited‑edition prints or reworked silhouettes, while a dedicated in‑house skate and music program keeps the brand attuned to cultural currents. By balancing respect for tradition with an experimental spirit, Carhartt WIP remains a benchmark for functional, forward‑thinking menswear
